The Royal Palace

Stockholm Palace or Royal Palace is the official residence of the Swedish monarch and the main royal palace. Stockholm Palace is located at Stadsholmen in Gamla stan in the capital Stockholm. It neighbors the Riksdag building.

The offices of the King, other members of the Swedish royal family and the Royal Court of Sweden are located here. The royal palace is used by the king for representational purposes when performing his duties as head of state.

This royal residence has been on the same site as Norström in the northern part of Stockholm's Gamla stan since the mid-13th century when Tre Kronar Castle was built. In modern times the name is associated with a building called Kunliga Slotet.

The palace was designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger and was placed on the same site as the medieval Tre Kroner Castle which was destroyed in a fire on 7 May 1697. Due to the costly Northern War that began in 1700, construction of the palace was halted.

In 1709, and did not resume until 1727, six years after the end of the war. When Tessin the Younger died in 1728, the palace was completed by Karl Harlemann who also designed much of its Rococo interior.
