The main fort was named Fort Aurangabad. Its construction was started by Prince Muhammad Azam Shah, son of Emperor Aurangzeb and a future Mughal emperor.

After the prince was recalled by his father, Shaista Khan oversaw the construction of the fort. The death of Shaesta Khan's daughter Pari Bibi halted the construction process, apparently due to Shaesta Khan's superstition that the fort brought ill omens.

Pari Bibi was buried inside the fort. Lalbagh Fort was built as the official residence of the governors of the Mughal provinces of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. The complex includes the Mughal governor's house, Pari Bibi's tomb and a mosque.

Established in 1974, the 186-acre Dhaka Zoo is the largest zoo in Bangladesh, and is managed by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. The zoo attracts about 10,000 visitors daily and this number increases on weekends and holidays.

The zoo is also known for poor conditions for animals and corruption of its officials. Dhaka Zoo has an annual budget of Tk 37.5 million, of which Tk 25 million is spent on feeding the animals.
