01. Burana Tower

Burana Tower is a large minaret in the Chui Valley of northern Kyrgyzstan. It is located near the city of Tokmok, about 80 km east of the country's capital, Bishkek. The tower with tombstones, some earthworks and the remains of a fort and three tombs are the remains of the ancient city of Balasagun which was founded by the Qarakhanids at the end of the 9th century.

The tower was built in the 11th century and was used as a template for other minarets. An exterior staircase and steep, winding stairs inside the tower enable visitors to climb to the top. It is one of the oldest architectural structures in Central Asia. The tower was originally 45 meters high. However, several earthquakes over the centuries have caused significant damage to the structure.

The last major earthquake in the 15th century destroyed the top half of the tower, reducing it to its current height of 25 meters. A renovation project was undertaken in the 1970s to restore its foundations and repair the west-facing part of the tower, which was in danger of collapsing.
