01. Bran Castle

Bran Castle

Bran Castle is a castle in Bran, 25 km southwest of Brasov. It is a national monument and landmark of Transylvania. The castle is located on the DN73 road, on the Transylvanian side of the historic border with Wallachia.

Commonly known as Dracula's Castle outside of Transylvania, it is marketed as the home of the title character of Bram Stoker's Dracula.

There is no evidence that Stoker knew anything about the castle, which has only a tangential connection to Vlad the Impaler, voivode of Wallachia, who shares his name with Dracula.

Stoker's description of Dracula's crumbling fictional castle also bears no resemblance to Bran Castle. The castle is now a museum dedicated to displaying art and furniture collected by Queen Mary.

Tourists can explore the interior on their own or by taking a guided tour. At the bottom of the hill is a small open-air museum exhibiting traditional Romanian peasant structures from the Bran region.
