In fact he was the first white male recipient of the prestigious Silver Plaque Award from the National Association to Promote Black. Sandburg came from Chicago and moved to Flat Rock, North Carolina in 1945 from Michigan. For many reasons, he chose a 265-hectare “Connemara” estate.
19. Sarah P. Duke Gardens
Sarah P. Duke Park is absolutely stunning. The two were born at Duke University, Durham and were named after the widow of the benefactor. It is built on an abandoned lake that is now in use for the purposes of the garden, which has been constructed in the absence of funding and is the only result.
More than 150 flowers were planted by 1935, and included annuals and many daffodils bulbs and iris of any variety. In 1936, the house was destroyed by floods, and the girl of the Dukes later built the garden a second time on a larger surface.
